Ball games and anything with opponents take jugar a plus the article: juego al fútbol, juego al tenis. Sports without a game — swimming, running, yoga — take hacer or practicar: hago natación, practico yoga. Saying jugar fútbol without the al is common in Latin America and fine in speech.

Two verbs for "play", and they don't overlap

Tocar is for instruments — toco la guitarra. Jugar is for games and sports — juego al fútbol. Using jugar with an instrument is one of the most recognisable learner errors. Handily, tocar also means "to touch", which is an easy way to remember which one involves your hands on the thing itself.

Gustar works backwards

It doesn't mean "to like" — it means "to be pleasing to". The thing liked is the subject, so the verb agrees with it, not with you: me gusta el libro for one thing, but me gustan los libros for several. With a verb it's always singular: me gusta leer. And to say who — a mí me gusta, a Juan le gusta — the a is obligatory.
